The Naples - Afragola High Speed Railway Station is the railway infrastructure that will flank Naples Central Station and will function as an interchange hub for high-speed trains to the Battipaglia-Reggio Calabria route, to Naples, and to the regional and Circumvesuviana railway services (included in the METROCAMPANIA regional metro system). When fully operational, about 300 trains per day will pass through the station with a maximum capacity of about 33,000 passengers.
The New Station, designed by Zaha Hadid, presents itself as a bridge that crosses the tracks, guaranteeing continuity between two parts of the urban fabric. The new nature and technology park will rise, and which would otherwise be cut off by the railway infrastructure. The fulcrum of the station is the large atrium accessed from the east and west ends of the bridge, from which, thanks to a system of large windows, it is possible to have a complete view of the surrounding landscape, the tracks and the shopping arcade. From a structural point of view, the station consists of three independent portions, each of which has a ‘bridge’ structure, where the ‘piers’ are identified by the three large reinforced concrete cores that house the vertical connections and provide vertical and lateral support to the decks that span the railway lines. The decks of the first two levels are made of post-tensioned prestressed concrete beams and pre-stressed ‘’ beams, which are placed side by side and connected at the top by a reinforced concrete slab. Interprogetti dealt with this project on several occasions during its approval process, developing in detail the executive design of the prestressed concrete bridge decks and the foundation system.
