Città della Scienza (City of Science) is a complex located in Bagnoli, in the western part of Naples, an area that once played a strategic role from an industrial point of view but it is now the subject of an extensive redevelopment plan.
The project has been implemented in stages since the late 1990s and is still in the process of completion. The project involved the recovery of over 30,000 square metres of industrial warehouses whose construction dates back to the end of the 19th century. A careful remodelling project of the existing volumes made it possible to insert distinct functions inside the old glassworks, making Città della Scienza the main science-themed event in Italy. The complex facing the sea houses the Museo Vivo della Scienza, while the block on the north side houses the Business Innovation Centre and the Centro di Alta Formazione. These completed facilities will be joined by the Museum of the Human Body, which, unlike the previous projects, will be a new building. Interprogetti developed the design of the structural interventions that were necessary from time to time for an efficient use of space in accordance with the expectations of the architectural project. The recovery of the tuff block masonry, the wooden trusses, the consolidation of the foundations, and the seismic adaptation of the buildings that required more substantial modifications were just some of the interventions designed at the executive level and followed on site during the construction phase.
