Ravello's auditorium, opened to the public in May 2010, is the work of architect Oscar Niemeyer. This intervention was strongly desired by the local community and authorities and has given these places, which have long been recognised nationally and internationally as a cultural and scenic attraction, the possibility of becoming a reception centre even during the winter season.
Interprogetti participated in this initiative as the designer of the structural works in the executive phase.
The work is articulated in bold geometries and complex forms, the realisation of which, while respecting the initial architectural vision but still aiming for efficient design, represented the greatest element of challenge. The multi-disciplinary approach that strongly characterised this work added an element of further complexity during the design phase, as the structure was a highly exposed interface to confrontation, and therefore to coordination, with the architectural and plant engineering disciplines and with the various specialists that were necessary to define the project.
Of particular technical interest is the shell roof that defines the volume of the concert hall, giving it impeccable acoustic performance. Another characterising element is the concert hall's deck which, in correspondence with the stage and orchestra area, cantilevers over the void with the Amalfi coast as a backdrop and on the shelf edge meets the shell roof.
The load-bearing structure of the glass façade plays a decidedly fundamental role within the structural organism. It is given the task of stiffening the floor deck in its cantilevered portion. A system of pre-stressed cables allows it to perform this function while preserving the characteristics of transparency and lightness inherent in the architectural design.
